Research & Process

Intro
This is an AI-driven historical strategy card game that combines generative storytelling with authentic sources such as Records of the Three Kingdoms. This project was completed in collaboration with interns and full-time researchers during my internship at The Research Center for Digital Humanities of Peking University (PKUDH). It is selected as one of 10 finalists in the AI Creation Track, and Top 55 finalists out of 1,359 teams overall, in the 2025 Tencent Game Award.

Project Summary

“The Northern Expedition” is set between the late Eastern Han and early Western Jin, focusing on Zhuge Liang’s (诸葛亮) Northern Expeditions. In 234 AD, during his fifth campaign at Wuzhang Plains (五丈原) against Sima Yi, Zhuge Liang employed strategies such as self-sustaining agriculture but died from overwork, leaving a legendary mark in the Three Kingdoms history. In the game, players embody historical figures, with AI-driven narratives referencing Records of the Three Kingdoms. Player choices shape the storyline, fostering an immersive and critical engagement with history.

Why Am I Here

In 2025 summer, during the internship at PKUDH, I also audited a PKU’s course Gamification and Innovative Thinking, which helped me realize my strong interest in the essence of gamification—making experiences engaging while motivating people’s participation. With my background in graphic and UI/UX design, I joined this project to explore how design can bring the result of academic research and AI’s power into interactive, real-world applications.
Our Team

The Research Center for Digital Humanities of Peking Unversity (PKUDH), dedicated to “AI-empowered humanities,” digitized and structured historical texts to build knowledge graphs. Seeing the potential for immersive applications, PKUDH initiated a project team that developed this game prototype within two months for the 2025 Tencent Game Design Competition.

Project VisionBeyond entertainment, the game carries an educational dimension, fostering a multidimensional view of history. It emphasizes the complexity of historical narratives and the openness to multiple interpretations, rather than presenting history through a single perspective.
Why Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮) ?
The game situates players within Zhuge Liang’s narrative perspective. In 234 AD, Zhu confronted Sima Yi at Wuzhangyuan while managing supply logistics, but died from overexertion.

This battle profoundly influenced the subsequent trajectory of Shu Han.

Competitor Analysis
Our game is a map-based historical strategy game. Before designing it, I researched various popular historical games on the market, analyzing their strengths and weaknesses, while refining our own positioning.

Technology ApplicationApplying AI technologies was a key exploration goal of this project, carrying significant value both for cost efficiency and for advancing technical innovation.

Design Goal
Core Positioning:
Grounded in historical records, the game emphasizes simulation where player decisions shape events.
Gameplay / Interaction:

The experience centers on information-flow interaction and card-based strategy, with outcomes shown through historical results and dynamically generated comic panels.

AI Driven Narratives:
Turn-based play enhanced by AI-generated narratives, maps, and comic visuals for immersion.
Visual & Interface Style:
Aged 2D aesthetic ; create a worktable-like interface, that situates the player in a strategic decision-making environment.

Interface Design Process

Card System Design
Initial Design:
Inspired by Legends of the Three Kingdoms, this design used jade tokens as the currency unit and a similar layout style.
Layout Optimization:
To accommodate a larger number of cards, the size of two panels was reduced, and a location-selection function was added.
Logic and System Updates (Final)
The linking logic between Character –Location–Skill was refined. A card discard function was introduced, visual feedback for card selection was updated, and the cost display was standardized.
